Recasting the Net footage

Earlier this month 4iP hosted the first debate in our ‘recasting the net’ series – with panellists including Matthew d’Ancona, Tom Loosemore, Charlie Beckett and Helen Milner and an audience of digital luminaries discussing the nature of the ‘digital revolution’ – if there was one, if it matters, who controls it, and what the implications are of being excluded from it.

You can now view all the foot age from the debate below and we will continue to gather more contributions on this site over the summer – so if you would like to add your thoughts about the way the web has changed our lives then please do get in touch.

Please also keep an eye out for our next event in September, when we will be Birmingham to explore the role of the web on local politics.

Where is the provision to make the videos accessible for Deaf and Disabled People?

I attended Recasting Power on 17th September in Birmingham. There were British Sign Language Interpreters present. They were instructed NOT to position themselves in the best place possible due to the filming.

This is despite them being there to interpret the event for Deaf people in the audience - I was one of them. I had to squint my way through with poor lighting on the interpreters who were sitting at opposite sides to the panellists.

None of the Recasting the Net videos above provide options for subtitling, audio description or British Sign Language Interpretation.

What is 4iP doing to address digital inequality for Deaf and Disabled people?

When will digital inclusion be taken seriously so that it is isn’t just about getting people to access the internet but the barriers faced in accessing digital content?
